Cap Black, Safety Creator among Many.

The latest spate of organized teen violence by a group I call the " Sucker Punch Gang, " in the Marigny and St. Roch communities, underscores the urgency of my safety creation theory.

As criminals become more " bold and brazen " to quote New Orleans Police Department Superintendent Shaun Ferguson, citizens must be more mobilized and motivated.

Caught between perpetual police staffing shortages, political dismisal of mass victimization and oppressive outside oversight of local law enforcement, citizens can either become silenced slaves-which elites prefer-or vocal victors in the battle to save our homes, events and public spaces from politically enabled career criminals.

If we did little more than safety walks, my basic service, escorting ourselves to vehicles and other destinations, that act alone displaces nearby negativity in the vicinity.

Groups like the Sucker Punch Gang revel in catching citizens alone and off guard. Safety walks are one way to disrupt such brutal opportunities.

Posting on social media about area crime is an easy, invaluable heads up to neighbors and other stakeholders about incidents, trends and even descriptions, photos and video of suspects. Cases have been made and folks saved with a few keystrokes. The internet town hall works!

Handing the baton of evidence to law enforcement is the last part of safety creation theory. Public confidence wavers, lowered by bad experiences, but ultimately we either partner with the police to some extent or institute impasses which only benefit career criminals. They bank on our never getting along.

The Sucker Punch Gang is yet another reminder of why I'm one safety creator among many.
