7:33PM Tonight!

Image
( From UrbanSafetyist on Instagram ): Email Threat Maker who's banned from the building was met by me just before he locked up his bicycle- just as his pre incident indicator suggested ( calling our Co-op earlier ), he was trying to make a surprise trespassing visit. After I told him he was banned he became violently angry and started screaming at me. I briefed staff and fellow Management and even got to talk to a pair of officers he'd called on me for not letting him enter the building??? LOL After I told them he was banned, they in turn informed him of the same. He telegraphed his intention to trespass and now has police alerted to his intention to trespass. The game's afoot! #SuspectSeeker #RewardAgent Directing Responses. #CapBlackUrbanSafetyist #headofsecurity #RewardSeeker Putting Negativity AWAY!

DON'T be a #Security Flunky

Image
DON'T be a #Security Flunky. One major reason why I consult and do safety advocacy are those who treat private professionals like flunkies. I come to the table as an advisor and decision maker, not a flunky left out of the loop and given marching orders. I've noted in my experience that the very people who ask for help carrying items to their business, for Insrance, have among them those who now see u as an indentured servant toward whom no slight nor outright disrespect is off limits. That's why I also avoid doing any clean up with these arrogant people'. I quickly direct them to site custodians or inform them where can get suppliers to do the clean up themselves. I respect myself and this industry and will not be a security flunky for anyone whose ego requires one. I strongly advise other professionals to do the same. Customer service or making clients happy is one thing- being treated like an inferior being is another matter entirely. There are TOO ...

Trayvon Martin: Victim of Someone Who shouldn't Have Done Citizens on Patrol

Image
Trayvon Martin was killed seven years ago today. He and another private citizen with equal legal standing  got into a life ending altercation. George Zimmerman, the armed citizen in the confrontation, has proven himself afterward to be every bit the thug that Martin's critics call him to this day. As a citizen on patrol for many years, this is a cautionary, classic case of how NOT to do neighborhood watch or patrol your community. Nadra Enzi aka Cap Black is a consultant and safety advocate in New Orleans.

Free the #NOPD!

Letter to the Editor about Ending the Consent Decree Over NOPD: I type this as someone who knows Susan Hutson, New Orleans Independent Police Monitor and John Arionne, the Federal Consent Decree Monitor tasked with overseeing the court ordered reform of the New Orleans Police Department. Both are passionate advocates for constitutional policing, peer mediation within department ranks and community engagement. I arrived in the real life Gotham City which is New Orleans shortly before the consent decree was in place. My hometown isn't a model for community policing but I nonetheless was vocal for just that, with intense emphasis on the complaints and concerns of law abiding Black citizens not being ignored. In New Orleans, law enforcement supporters  endured years of  " Blue Hemmoarge  ( mass retirement and quitting in  protest of the past mayor and present federal oversight ) " where police response time was measured in days instead of minutes due to this unpr...

Old and New Public Safety Racism.

Public Safety Racism: Old and New. #CapBlackUrbanSafetyist  A gun battle this weekend between brave officers and a brutal armed robbery suspect on Canal St. and Elk Place, a bad corner of New Orleans Central Business District  ( CBD ), brought home a point I made about that corner, and urban insecurity, for years. Five innocent bystanders were hit as the suspect opened fire when officers approached him. The corner is heavily populated by working class Black people trying to get from Point A to B at its busstop. For years bus passengers and pedestrians navigated open air drug dealing and menacing mobs of young men. The impression I always got when I'd email the past office holders about this corner's powderkeg potential, was that my concerns as a safety advocate who is Black weren't important. Such menace is considered par for the course for urban environments so no special attention was needed, even if the occasional bus rider or dope boy got shot....

Lack Consciousness Makes Some Choose Crime!

My safety creation theory involves looking at motivational and even metaphysical ( or energy related ) causes for people to create safety and conversely, produce insecurity. Progressive friends will point to poverty and racial discrimination as reasons why criminals, especially urban ones, citing these issues as reasons for offending shouldn't be punished. They go a step further and state said issues demand wholesale reenvisioning of the criminal justice system, with decriminalization and cash bail abolition as major objectives, regardless of dire consequences. Old School brother that I am, I usually politely differ.  In this instance, I'll politely differ with a caveat. The caveat is criminals using poverty and pigmentation as excuses to commit crime are burdened with a consciousness of lack; a concept familiar to my metaphysical and energy work minded friends. The perspective I have on consciousness of lack as a motive for crime is it's a zero sum cop ou...

You Don't Have to Wear a Uniform to #CreateSafety

Image
My safety creation theory is pure citizen on patrol in its approach. I don't do badges, camouflage pants and shades. More power to folks in traditional private security who dress that way, but mine is a plainclothes style. My message is you too  can be a safety creator and you don't need to look like anyone but yourself to do it. The citizen on patrol approach is a departure from the paramilitary branding of traditional private security as the industry addesses its image problem. To the traditional private security professionals out there, I salute you and know that next to a mobilized public, you are easily society's leading organized protective resource. Keep doing your thing and I'll keep doing mine and together, security professionals and mobilized citizens alike, will form an even bigger protective resource for society. You dont have to wear a uniform to create safety and I salute those who do! #CapBlackUrbanSafetyist

#PlaceWatch: Looking out for Porches and Places During Parades!

Image
It's Mardi Gras season in New Orleans and that means thousands of revelers seeking fun in our neighborhoods. It also means a dramatic uptick in uninvited guests looking for somewhere to sprawl, use as an improvised restroom or even vandalize. Last year,bI did a place watch on Mardi Gras Day at a friends house on the quieter end of world famous Bourbon St. My role was keeping revelers from entering her house party and also not sitting on the front and side stairs. Litter control rounded out my duties. Before, during and after parades is when porches and places experience crowds and within them, folks we need to lookout for. Place watching is part of making safe fun by reestablishing boundaries which friends, neighbors and safety creators like me can referee. #CapBlackUrbanSafetyist  #SafeFunSupervisor

Directing Apprehensions- Reward Seeker Style!

Directing Apprehensions- #RewardSeeker Style! As a safety creator and Head of Security for a multi purpose building, I sometimes create safety by being a reward seeker. Reward seeking is my way for folks who aren't licensed bail recovery agents ( bounty hunters ) to nonetheless go after suspects and advertised wanted fugitives. There are two types of reward seeker: overt ones who actually detain suspects and covert ones who secretly direct police to identified suspects and fugitives. I urge would be safety creators to practice either style or ideally, both. Doing nothing means unwittingly aiding and abetting criminals who don't need your help. Last year, I shadowed a shoplifter I'd banned from the building after spotting him on its security cameras. He didn't know I was behind him on the phone with a police executive who had several units descend upon him en masse. Another time in 2018 myself and a covert ensemble of business owners kept tabs on ...

#RewardSeeker: Expanded #Bountyhunting.

Image
#RewardSeekers: Expanded #Bountyhunting. ( From UrbanSafetyist on Instagram ): People who are wanted by the law, and unwanted by victims, families, friends, and victim advocates, may need pursuers beyond the ranks of overburdened law enforcement and  #bailagents facing competition from the pre trial release movement. Many moons ago back home, as my #SafetyCreation Theory took shape, I applied the basic role of  #bountyhunter to non #bail related fugitives: child support, probation and parole violators and fugitives advertised in local papers. Some long term #bountyhunters had shared this expansion of #fugitiverecovery and I explored it. My working title for such  endeavors is Reward Seeker ( RS ). A reward seeker is an expanded bounty hunter whose #motivation isn't always monetary ( Gasp!, Lol ) and doesn't require an intermediary like a bail agent. #Motivation runs the gamut from the thrill of the " hunt " per se to the satisfaction of ins...

Brief Reflection after Nearby Gunfire

Image
Brief Reflection after Nearby Gun fire. ( From UrbanSafetyist on Instagram ): A half hour ago my semi conscious slumber was disturbed by a disturbed individual several blocks away repeatedly firing a weapon. My advocacy is #motivational and even #metaphysical so through these twin lenses I take a dim view of such negative outbursts. How do some people take this magic of guiding invisible energy and myriad physiological reactions to do something as dangerous and craven as fire a weapon  before sunrise in a densely populated area? What wavelength and worldview justifies such nehavior? I don't know and since I'm not a member of my coalition called to figure out such dysfunction, I redouble my calling, which is creating safety against such chaotic energy. It doesn't deserve to be around innocent people. There are #SafetyCreators and there are #insecurityproducers. This gunfire clearly was the product of a producer of insecurity. #CapBlackUrbanSafetyist #Securi...

Lyft Should Have Safety Riders Accompany Drivers.

Image
( Exclusive to UrbanSafetyist blog ): Last night, a Lyft ride home from work  ( I'm Head of Security for the New Orleans Healing Center ) included a surprise: The Lyft driver had a male companion, perhaps her son, seated beside her on the front seat. While not current Lyft policy, it is a policy recommendation I would like to see instituted. I'd call these companions " safety riders " and as the title implies, their role would be securing drivers who'd feel safer with someone they know along for the ride. Their role would be non confrontational and would serve as extra witnesses or assistance. This policy recommendation is in response to having heard many drivers lament rowdy events and passengers. Safety riders would go through the same background check and have their faces and names appear below those of the drivers they accompany when a passenger hails one. It's added safety creation for all concerned. I'd gladly serve as a safety ride...
